Ubuntu Server 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat)

February 8, 2011

Welcome to the Internet & Network Services module. First let’s download a Linux distribution. Ubuntu server edition 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) is the distro of choice for this year, last year we used CentOS, this year we will use a different distro. You can download Ubuntu from the download page. This is the 64-bit version of the product and will use this throughout the rest of the semester.

We will also use VMware to install Ubuntu on the lab PCs. Remember to create your Ubuntu image in the C:\vmos folder as you have write access rights to this directory. Give your installed image a unique name so that you can reuse it again next week. It is also advisable to make a backup of the image before the class ends. Therefore it is important to keep the image to a size that will fit on any removable device that you intend to use.

When installing Ubuntu Server using VMware select the default options and the rest of the install will be automated.

Please note and remember the username and password that you selected above as these will be needed to login to your new instance of Ubuntu Server.
